LG Innotek, Ansys expand partnership to boost engineering efficiency

By Nam Hyun-woo

LG Innotek said Thursday that it will apply digital twin technologies to all of its processes for producing electric components, by expanding its partnership with Ansys, the world’s leading engineering simulation software firm.

A digital twin is a virtual representation of an object or system designed to reflect a physical object accurately. This simulation process allows digital predictions of real-world scenarios, helping to anticipate outcomes before they happen in reality.

Ansys is known as the global leader in engineering simulation software for product design, testing and operation, based on its 3D modeling, artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies.

Previously, LG Innotek and Ansys ran pilot applications of digital twin technology in some of the formers’ designing and manufacturing processes. LG Innotek said the pilot applications have reported “visible results” and it decided to expand the collaboration across its entire product lineup, including components for autonomous driving, vehicle connectivity and sensing systems.

After applying digital twin technology, the company said it successfully reduced the development time for semiconductor package substrates by up to 99 percent. Additionally, the company optimized equipment settings in the production process for flip-chip ball grid arrays, cutting the ramp-up time by half.

LG Innotek said it plans to extend the application of digital twin technology across its entire value chain, so that it can use the technologies for collaborations with clients and partner companies. Through this, clients and partner companies can participate in product design and simulate production efficiency within LG Innotek’s virtual digital twin platform.

“LG Innotek portrays a future where simulation results in virtual spaces are seamlessly connected to physical production facilities in an automated process,” LG Innotek Chief Technical Officer Noh Seung-won said.

“To achieve this, we will integrate advanced digital twins across the entire value chain, including R&D, production, and quality control, to create distinctive customer value.”
