Medical Devices and Life Sciences Working Group

The integration of engineering simulation into medical and healthcare fields offers exciting opportunities to design better medical devices and advance personalised medicine. From biomechanical modelling of tissues and organs to fluid dynamics in cardiovascular systems, advanced in silico simulation methods are reshaping the landscape of healthcare and medical technology.

The NAFEMS Technical Working Group on Medical and Healthcare is being established to bring together industry leaders, healthcare professionals, academic researchers, experts from regulatory authorities, standards-development organisations and software developers. Our aim is to promote the development, understanding, and practical application of in silico simulation techniques in the medical and healthcare sectors, ensuring that these tools meet the rigorous standards required for clinical and regulatory use.

Recognising the growing importance of simulation methods in medical applications, our group is dedicated to:

  1. Facilitating Collaboration

We will create a platform for open dialogue and the exchange of ideas among professionals from academia, industry, and software development. This collaborative environment will help address interdisciplinary challenges effectively.

  2. Promoting Best Practices

By drawing on the collective expertise of our members, we aim to develop guidelines, standards, and best practices that enhance the reliability, accuracy, and clinical relevance of simulation methods in medical and healthcare applications.

  3. Developing a Competency Framework

Building a framework of competencies that is required for an engineering simulation professional to be successful in the domain of Medical Devices and Life Sciences.

Scope of Our Work

  • Simulation Driven Design of Medical Devices: supporting the design and optimisation of medical devices, ensuring that they perform safely and effectively.
  • Medical Device Approval Processes: using simulation results to support regulatory submissions by providing robust evidence of a devices' safety and efficacy.
  • Surgical Planning and Training: simulation tools that help plan surgical procedures and train clinicians in a risk‐free environment.
  • Biomedical Modelling: the simulation of biological tissues and organs to better understand their behaviour under various conditions.
