BENCHmark April 2005 World Congress 2005 edition

The centre pages of this issue of BENCHmark provide details of a major event in the NAFEMS calendar: our tenth International Conference. Although the NAFEMS World Congress is held every two years, this year’s event is particularly significant as it is combined with the final meeting of the FENet project.

I’m sure that many of those from the 110+ European organisations who have been involved with FENet will agree that it has been a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable project. A true international "network" has been formed. At a formal level, technical information has been shared and thoroughly discussed. A multitude of new business relationships have been forged. And beyond that, I know that many of the participants feel that they have made a new group of friends. The challenge now that the project comes to its conclusion is to find a series of appropriate activities to ensure that these contacts can be maintained.

Certainly, from the NAFEMS perspective, we have gained a number of new and enthusiastic supporters of the organisation from across Europe who are willing to champion the ideals of NAFEMS. In many cases, these are forming the core of our new regional groups.

Holding the final meeting of FENet in conjunction with the World Congress provides an excellent opportunity to share the results of the project with a broad, worldwide audience. This, combined with a truly exceptional response to our Call for Papers, should ensure that this year’s conference is rewarding and worthwhile for all those who are able to attend.
