So that was summer. Living in Scotland, we’re never quite sure when the seasons begin and end, but I’m assured by colleagues in other parts of the world that there was indeed a summer this year. Not that we saw much of it.

Aside from the trees changing colours and the nights getting colder, there’s always one significant change that marks the move from summer to autumn – yes folks, conference season is upon us once again.  A time to catch up with the latest developments in the industry, take a look at the latest software available, and meet with friends and colleagues old and new. It’s also the time when NAFEMS announces its conference programme for the coming year, and in 2012 we are holding more events than ever before.

In this issue of benchmark, you’ll find more detail on our 2012 regional conference programme, with events having been confirmed in the UK, Germany, France and Sweden, and several additional conferences to be confirmed in the coming weeks. It is a testament to the growing strength of the NAFEMS community that there is an appetite for such regional events. The biennial World Congress is inevitably not accessible to everyone, but these regional events are held in countries where we have a strong membership base,allowing as many NAFEMS members, and non-members, as possible to be a part of the community by participating in these independent forums.

We hope that you, and your colleagues, will be able to attend one, if not more, of these events next year – the NAFEMS team are certainly planning on making each conference bigger and better than ever before, and we want you to be a part of that, whether you submit a presentation, attend as a delegate, or participate as an exhibitor. 

One of the articles in this issue particularly caught my eye, and I think it will certainly be of interest to most of you, regardless of the technologies or industries you focus on. Focussing on ‘atmospheric modelling’ in the urban environment, the article by Zheng-Tong Xie of theUniversity of Southampton on page 26 gives an insight into a real, practical application of CFD in an environment we can all relate to, and discusses a genuinely promising technique in examining a difficult problem.  This is what NAFEMS is all about – the sharing and discussion of new techniques, applications and findings, within a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for analysis and related technologies.

On the subject of community, we hope that you will consider attending the NAFEMS AGM, which this year will be held on November 15thin Munich, Germany. NAFEMS members also have the opportunity to stand for election to the NAFEMS Council of Management at the AGM – full details of how to go about this will be sent to our members in due course.
