Anyone who has followed the start of the 2022 Formula 1 season will be aware that something new has entered the sport – bouncing F1 cars! Of course, this has not been intentional; it is an unintended consequence of new rule changes introduced this season, designed to make racing closer and more exciting. The fact that this bouncing effect, known as porpoising, has been widespread and affected all of the F1 teams to some extent at the first on track testing sessions in February provides an important learning opportunity relating to the validation of engineering simulation.
