Simulation of the manufacturing process is an importantfield that has yielded great benefit to the manufacturingindustry. Over the last two decades, mature simulation tools for plastic injection molding, casting, forging and extrusion have been developed and these tools are utilized extensively in industry. Simulation tools also exist for welding but these tools are not as widely used. What about the additive manufacturing (AM) process? Simulation tools are emerging for this new manufacturing method and this article will provide a review of the challenges and opportunities with this simulation field.
