New standard: RG.Aero 000 47 - Programme management Verification and validation of numerical models and simulations

The presentation by Marina Epis (Bureau de Normalisation de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace (BNAE), the French Aerospace Standardization Development Organization), introduced the new standard RG.Aero000 47, focusing on program management and the verification and validation (V&V) of numerical models and simulations in aerospace.

The BNAE, established in 1941 and located near Paris, is a non-profit association involved in French, European, and international standardisation for aeronautics and space. It has a significant normative heritage of standards and operates with a team of 12 employees and over 3900 industrial experts. BNAE’s role is crucial in program management, system engineering, digital applications, materials and processes, quality and safety management, and other areas within the aerospace sector.

RG.Aero000 47 was developed in response to the recognised need for a comprehensive document in French on the V&V of digital models and simulations. The standard aims to establish rules for building and demonstrating the credibility of simulations based on objective evidence, thereby standardising practices and strengthening the link with product V&V. It targets a wide range of recipients, from simulation specialists and managers to technical management, decision-makers, software vendors, and others in the aerospace industry.

The document provides an inventory of best practices in the V&V of numerical simulations and models. It aims to ensure the credibility of the results obtained, accelerating the development of decision-making support, reducing physical tests, and shortening development times. While it doesn't aim to replace existing qualification and certification processes, it provides a pragmatic approach to enhancing the role of modeling and simulation in these areas.

The content of RG.Aero000 47 includes an overview of best practices, recommendations based on the challenges of simulation, and an extensive section on normative references and definitions. The document is structured to be applicable across various organisations and simulation types, providing recommendations for different criticality levels and confidence stages in the simulation process.

Looking ahead, there are plans to convert RG.Aero000 47 into an EN (European Norm) standard to broaden its reach and applicability across Europe. The transformation into an EN standard will provide greater visibility, involve more extensive consultation, and enrich the document with European inputs.
