These event proceedings were created in support of the NAFEMS DACH Seminar "Design-related CFD- state and future developmentsDesign and simulation" held on the 11-12th of November 2019 in Wiesbaden, Germany.
How does the harmonious interaction of an optimal development process of CAD developers and simulation experts in the company succeed? In order to shorten development times, results of simulation calculations must be available in early development phases, ie already in the design phase.
Approaches have existed for a long time, but are rarely used. Either the complexity of the software was too great, the numerical experience of the users (CAD designers) was insufficient, the acceptance of the software was too low or confidence in the generated simulation results was lacking.
This is changing with the increasingly improved integration of calculation methods, the development of interfaces between CAD and CFD, the direct linking of CFD to CAD geometry, and the ease of use of flow calculation tools (CFD tools). Being able to perform simple but also more complex flow calculations and optimizations directly out of the design environment can enormously expand the design possibilities in the preliminary design.
How can you profitably merge the skills of simulation experts in charge of calculations and designers who know what changes in the product are possible in detail? Can design-based simulation and optimization techniques help reduce product development time and improve product quality for a critical competitive advantage?
