New way to understand heat treatment

In this paper we go through a heat treatment process in a numerical simulation environment for heat Treatment simulation. Through thermal FEM analysis it is capable to account for different metallurgical phenomena like phase change and to calculate hardness of a steel part. We show the process steps to be taken and the results of a carburization, quenching, tempering and surface hardening and show that the results are in correlation to tests. We also highlight some possible application areas in the field of automotive FEA.
