This paper on "Computer Assisted Learning to Expert Systems to Artificial Intelligence - An Inexorable Process for the Finite Element Method?" was presented at the International Conference on Quality Assurance and Standards in Finite Element Analysis - 13-15 May 1987, The Grand Hotel, Brighton.
The paper considers three stages of development in the use of computers to extend the capability of the scarce resource of expertise in the use of the Finite Element Method. The developments are discussed in terms of the practical, legal and ethical questions which are unavoidable as the automation of decision making progresses.
