Summary

In order to introduce greater levels of automation plus vital quality control into the use of the finite element method, a good understanding and description of the processes is needed. The paper presents the application of a systems analysis technique (SADTTM) to the actions of the finite element analyst working from the particular starting point of a solid model of the component to be analysed. SADT is an activity modelling approach which has been widely used, particularly for modelling of ill-defined systems in management and manufacturing. The model presented here distinguishes between the different specific activities and defines the context in which the analyst performs those activities. The emphasis is on the idealisation stage of the analysis process. The benefits of the approach are seen to be through the development of an agreed terminology and a clearer view of how the analyst progresses the task of idealisation based on solid models.
