This paper on "Adaptive Remeshing Based on Error Estimations - Foundation, Implementation and Application" was presented at the 5th International Conference on Reliability of Finite Element Methods for Engineering Applications - 10-12 May 1995, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The paper gives a review of both concepts for automatically grading finite element meshes based on the knowledge about the initial behaviour of the solution (a priori error estimation) and the local mesh refinement techniques during the analysis controlled by energetic error indicators (a posteriori error estimation). For coupling of coarse with refined mesh regions special transition elements. which ensure C0 compatibility in 2D and 1D linear elasticity are used. The concept and technique has been implemented in the general purpose finite element package COSAR and tested under the conditions of real engineering applications. Some examples illustrate the possibilities of adaptive mesh grading techniques as described in the paper.
