This paper on "A Simple Method of Mesh Adaptation in Shape Optimisation" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Design, Simulation & Optimisation: Reliability & Applicability of Computational Methods - 9-11 April 1997, Stuttgart, Germany.
In shape optimisation a tool is needed to transfer changes in geometry given by the optimisation algorithm to the finite element mesh. The present paper gives a description of an algorithm to adapt an existing mesh of finite elements to the altering shape of a certain part in shape optimisation. The algorithm works very quickly and is suitable for moderate changes in shape from one iteration to another. It can replace a remeshing procedure and makes shape optimisation possible for all those optimisation programs without a remeshing algorithm.
