Design Application of Numerical Modelling of Fully Clamped Concrete Slabs

This paper on "Design Application of Numerical Modelling of Fully Clamped Concrete Slabs" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Design, Simulation & Optimisation: Reliability & Applicability of Computational Methods - 9-11 April 1997, Stuttgart, Germany.

Summary

Optimisation of model parameters for a class of structural problem is essential in the use of the finite element method for predicting behaviour within that class(1). Through a series of parametric studies using a simple concrete model, simulation of tests on 8 fully clamped concrete slabs was used as a basis for establishing a set of optimum parameter values. Following a successful check on the reliability of using such parameter values for FE prediction, the model was used for predicting the peak load and corresponding displacement for numerous 'computer model' slabs. Design 'charts developed from these predictions, serve for quick and reliable determination of the ultimate strength and displacement of arbitrary fully clamped slabs.
