Mesh Generation and Adaptive Remeshing by a Local Optimization Principle

This paper on "Mesh Generation and Adaptive Remeshing by a Local Optimization Principle" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Design, Simulation & Optimisation: Reliability & Applicability of Computational Methods - 9-11 April 1997, Stuttgart, Germany.

Abstract

This paper intends to describe the present capabilities of the general mesh topology improvement technique as it has been proposed few years ago. It is shown how all the meshing topics in 2D and in 3D can be revisited with the help of a local optimization principle. The mesh generation can be seen as a minimal volume problem and the adaptive remeshing as a locally perturbed element shape optimization. Several examples are given covering different aspects of meshing including the minimal surface construction and the parallel adaptive remeshing. The techniques described in this paper are currently used in the commercial code FORGE3. Examples of simulation using an automatic 3D remesher are described.
