R-Adaptivity for Metal Forming

This paper on "R-Adaptivity for Metal Formings" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Design, Simulation & Optimisation: Reliability & Applicability of Computational Methods - 9-11 April 1997, Stuttgart, Germany.

Summary

Adaptivity of numerical methods is often necessary for successful metal forming simulations. Although the main focus today is on remeshing techniques, there are many situations in metal forming simulations where a simpler node relocation approach can be an alternative or a complement. A typical case is when a sheet is drawn over a die edge. Here a refined region should move along the sheet as it moves over the edge. In this paper, a new method for moving nodes in r-adaptive analyses of general shell and so1id structures is presented. The method consists of solving an auxiliary problem - a constrained thermal stress problem - for updating of the nodal positions.
