A Generic Engineering Analysis Model

This paper on "A Generic Engineering Analysis Model" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Design, Simulation & Optimisation: Reliability & Applicability of Computational Methods - 9-11 April 1997, Stuttgart, Germany.

Abstract

To be able to solve complex industrial problems, engineers are faced with the need to combine several kinds of analyses carried out with different simulation tools, and to transfer engineering data between these tools. Therefore, a major business requirement would be met if companies could be offered a flexible but integrated CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) environment.: this was the aim of the GEM project when it started in June 1994.
The GEM project has developed a generic engineering analysis data model, which can be used for data sharing and which supports a variety of engineering applications.
This paper details the modelling methodology and then gives an overview of the basic generic concepts of the GEM data model. The potential benefits of the GEM approach are illustrated through an industrial scenario.
To disseminate the project's results, the ultimate goal is to integrate the GEM model into the ISO STEP standard. Successful exploitation will therefore come about from end-user involvement as the standard becomes widely adopted.
