FE Model Updating for Linking Controller Design and FE Simulation of Structure Control

This paper on "FE Model Updating for Linking Controller Design and FE Simulation of Structure Control" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Effective Engineering Analysis - 25-28 April 1999, Newport, Rhode Island, USA.

Summary

It is fundamental for understanding of the interaction in an actively controlled structure and for the simulation of controller robustness and stability under varying conditions to have an accurate model. The basis structure as well as active elements can be modelled with appropriate elements within a finite element code. FE models tend to be rather large for real industrial structures and it is apparent that before starting control systems design a most reliable FE model is a prerequisite. This aim places a demand upon model updating, for model reduction and parameter uncertainties can lead to serious spillover effects and instability of the controller. This paper investigates some aspects of model updating of structures for control by using large order finite element models and low order controllers for suppression of vibration (active damping), in terms of both controller simulation and design. Experimental modal analysis is used to correct the FE model with updating procedure before put to use to controller design and simulation In order to link controller design methods with a finite element program and to integrate the simulation of control into it, appropriate interfaces between structure and controller have been designed.
