This paper on "Finite Element Analysis as a Tool in the Design of an Occipito-Cervical Plate Device for the Human Spine" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Effective Engineering Analysis - 25-28 April 1999, Newport, Rhode Island, USA.
There are several problems with existing occipito-cervical fixation devices and a new device is currently being developed. Finite element analysis has been used as a tool in the design process. This paper describes how one part of the device, the plate, was modelled and subjected to a three-dimensional finite element analysis, using a variety of loading conditions. The results will help to determine the final geometry and dimensions of the device. Finally, a test protocol is outlined so that the device can be tested to an appropriate standard and the results compared to the finite element results.
